December 2017 Lifestyle Letter

At the holidays, it’s the thought.

What’s your favorite holiday tradition? Pulling out the decor? Sending the annual holiday cards? Making those once-a-year family recipes?

For me, it’s my secret, annual fantasy of taking my immediate family to a remote island and exchanging homemade gifts made of seashells. Just kidding. Sort of.

The truth is that connections to family and loved ones are what keep me from escaping to a warm beach somewhere. Truly, the winter holidays are when I pause, spend quality time with special people, and vow to do better next year. And my favorite holiday tradition, although it should happen more than once a year, is thinking of my loved ones very purposefully and personally. What would make them most happy? What would make them smile?

It’s in this spirit of “otherness” that the Lifestyle team — which this month welcomed Associate Editor Jodi Horner (yay!) — shared stories of both the material and the spiritual gifts the season brings.

Tangible gifts, thoughtfully given, can bring intangible gifts, too. What better way to say “I love you” to the road warrior on your list than with a gift of a cashmere travel kit? What would make mom happier year than filling her home with a fresh floral bouquet every month of the year? For these and other ideas for everyone on your list, check out this year’s holiday gift guide we’re calling “Luscious, Luxe, Tech and Tots” (p._).

“A Show of Tradition” (p._) sneaks a peek at other families’ traditions and offers ideas for starting your own. And if thoughts of family have you hankering to research your family tree in the new year, you’ll want to brush up on the latest genealogy tips and resources in “Who Am I?” (p._).

For all this and more, from entertaining to epicurean delights at Jozi’s Kitchen & Shebeen, we hope you enjoy our special “Holiday” issue as much as we enjoyed putting it together!

From the whole Lifestyle team, here’s wishing you a season that’s happy and filled with those who mean the most to you. And a very happy and blessed New Year!
